Ikea- Ruffled Scarf!

I was invited to a Blogger Mixer & Networking Event at Ikea.  It was so much fun to make some new blogging friends and to be able preview some of the new displays at Ikea and get a sneak peek at their new catalog! They fed us breakfast and then they sent on on a shopping spree!  It doesn’t get any better than that!  Thank you Celeste and Ikea and Tauni at SNAP for putting this great event together!

For my shopping spree, along with a lot of the kitchen essentials that I love at Ikea, I picked up this wonderful Ofelia blanket.

It is so soft and stretchy and luxurious and makes the most cozy blanket.  I thought that it would be perfect to put on this chair in my office. Now who wouldn’t love to curl up in this chair with a book or just for a relaxing moment  or two?

So I know that you are all wondering what in the world all of this has to do with ruffled scarves, right?  Well, when I bought this I immediately thought of how cute this fabric would be to make some ruffled scarves!  There is no elastic in this fabric so I knew that I could cut it up and it would keep its ruffles!

So is there anyone out there that would like to make some ruffled scarves?

I just took a scarf that I already had and laid it out on the fabric to determine where to cut it.I cut it into and 8 1/2 inch strip by the length of the blanket (67 inches).  My husband helped me cut this because it is so stretchy that it would be hard to cut by yourself.  There are actually lines in the fabric, so it was easy to keep my cuts straight!
Then all you have to do is turn under 1/4 ”  twice on the edges  and stitch.  If you use the outside pieces, all you have to do is hem one side because the two side edges are already hemmed.! When you are hemming the edges, you will want to stretch the fabric out all of the way like this:These are what the simple hemmed scarves look like…and guess what they dye beautifully too!  Don’t you love that pop of orange for the fall months coming up!

For an infinity scarf all you do is fold the fabric over and sew a seam all the way down the length of the fabric.  Turn right side out and then simply sew the ends together into a circle to complete the loop.  I used my serger and the seam ends up being on the inside of the loop, so it does not show and the fabric is so ruffly that you cannot even see where the seam is anyway!  I also cut off 18 inches of the length for this scarf, because it is too long if left the full length. This knotted scarf is the easiest of all to make because all you do is simply fold your cut fabric in half and sew the entire length of the fabric, stretching your fabric out as you sew.  Turn right side out and knot the ends! This belt is the knotted scarf above.  We undid the knots and wrapped it around twice.  Tie a knot and then simply wrap the ends around the knot to make a flower! How cute is that?So there you have some fun ideas to make a ruffled scarf!  These would be perfect for gifts for the upcoming holidays.  You can make 6 scarves out of one blanket, so they are very inexpensive!

I had some fabric left over so I decided that I would make one more thing for my home!  They make the cutest darn pillows you ever did see!  And the fact that this fabric dyes like a charm, means that you can make it any coordinating color to match the decor in your own home!  To make your own darling pillowslip cover simply follow the directions that I gave here.  They are seriously a 15 minute project.  Another fun Christmas gift idea, because even though it is August we are already thinking in that direction! :)

So the next time you are in Ikea you may just want to pick up one of these fun little throws, but then again, you might just want to pick up two…one to use for a throw and one to cut up for some fun projects!

Thanks again to Ikea, Celeste and Tauni for a great time and for some fun new projects for me to make!   Oh, as for the other throw that I showed in the picture, you will just have to wait and see what I can come up with for that one.  But I am  pretty sure that it will be red and white!
