How to Make Fresh Strawberries Last Longer

A couple of weeks ago my husband declared that he really did not love strawberries anymore…REALLY???  How can you not love strawberries?  Well, I did not want to give up my little addition with strawberries…so I decided to see if there was anything that I could do to make my strawberries last a little longer, since I am the only one eating them.  I came across this wonderful post from “To Simply Inspire” and I decided to try it out.how to make fresh strawberries last longerI am in love with this little trick!  You can make your strawberries last for more than a week in your refrigerator!  All you need is cold water and vinegar!  The vinegar kills mold spores that are on the strawberries.  And after you rinse the berries there is no vinegar taste left on the strawberries!how to make fresh strawberries last longerJust mix 2 cups of cold water and 1/2 cup of white vinegar in a bowl and soak your fresh strawberries for about twenty minutes.how to make fresh strawberries last longer

After twenty minutes…drain, rinse, and lay out to dry on several layers of paper towels.  You must make sure that you let the berries dry completely, for about an hour.

I decided that I wanted a fresh fruit salad for dinner the other night, and I wanted a yummy dressing to add to it. I found this Pretty, Yummy Fruit Salad from Pioneer Woman and…    MY OH MY!fruit saladThis is an Orange Vanilla dressing and it is Amazing!  I know that I am on a no-sugar kick except for one day a week and this has sugar in it, but I only drizzled just a little bit on the fruit.  It gives it a fresh shiny look and just the right amount of sweetness with the vanilla and the tartness with the orange juice and zest!  MMM

I kept the rest in a jar, in the fridge, so that I can add just a little bit to my fruit salads!  My husband ate his salad and did not complain one bit about the strawberries!  :)  So maybe this dressing will be the trick to keep him eating strawberries…or maybe he was just being nice and did not say anything!  :)

If you have some fresh berries, you might just want to try this trick.  My strawberries in the fridge still look great.  I am not sure how long these berries will last, but I will probably have them all eaten before they ever go bad!

Thanks for visiting today.  Have a Happy one!

    1. Debbie, So far this tip has worked great! I am going on 5 days now and my strawberries (what few I have left!) still look as fresh as the day I brought them home! I am so excited to be able to keep my strawberries longer! And I am still cheating on my limited sugar diet, just a little bit with a drizzle of that yummy syrup on my fresh fruit salads! :)

  1. I will try it also…was just a little skeptical because of the vinegar….thanks for sharing this wonderful idea…I have it when the berries spoil too fast.

  2. Will be doing this from now on to my strawberries. I might just try it tonight with the container of blueberries since the squirrels and birds and I are the only ones in this house that eats them. (Once they start to spoil, I toss the berries in the yard.) Thanks for sharing this idea.

  3. Thank you for sharing your talents! Your handouts are so cute and clever! I just love them and look forward to see what you come up with each month. I love to see the delight on my ladies faces when I give them your handouts. You make it easy for someone like me who is not very computer savy to be a better visiting teacher! Thank you so very much.

    1. Karrie, Thank you so much for your kind comment. I love when someone can use one of my ideas…so thanks for making my day today! Hope you have a great day and Happy Visiting this month!
