My New Toy…A Nikon D7100!

My husband and I just got back from a LONG road trip.  It was not necessarily long in the days that we were gone, but it was long in the amount of miles that we drove!  We went up to Vancouver Island in Canada and then drove part way down the 101 coastline highway.  We left on a Thursday afternoon, but not until I received my newest little toy from UPS.  We actually waited for it to come, so that I could take it with us on our trip!  :)me and my camera!I was just like a kid on Christmas morning!

Nikon D7100I have been taking an online photography class to try to learn a few more skills and I decided that when I was done, it would be a good time to invest in a new camera.  My old camera is a Nikon D50, so it is pretty old.  I knew that I would stick with the Nikon brand because I have a couple of other Nikon Lenses and wanted to be able to still use them with this new camera.Nikon D7100 backpackI ordered this camera from B & H Photo Video and I love that it came with this backpack, a charger, a memory card and a wonderful 18-140 mm lens!  And it was cheaper with all of these accessories, than just the camera body at a local camera store!camera backpackThis back pack was perfect for taking all of my gear on our trip!  It even has enough room for my old camera and lens.taking picturesI was able to use this camera right away, because a lot of the features were the same as my old camera and I had lots of time to read the manual while we were traveling!  The one feature that I love the most is that this camera has the ability to take videos!  I was just using my cellphone to take videos before this!

I will tell you about our trip in another post (or two)…  I took over 500 pictures, so I am going to have to go through and sort them out!  But I wanted to share one video with you.  We were staying in the small town of Astoria, Oregon and when we got to the hotel, it had a small balcony on it, so I went out to look at the ocean and I could hear the sound of sea lions!  They sounded like they were right outside the door!  I could not see anything, so I took a little walk down a path towards the sound and this is what I saw:

Sea Lion Video

You will have to click on the link to view the video until I can figure out how to insert videos again in this new configuration!  Sorry! :(

I think that I am in love with my newest toy and that it will get many years of use!  I am still learning about photography, but it has been so fun to learn new things and new techniques!  I still have a lot to learn…but I am having a great time during this learning process!

Do you have something new that you are learning?  It is always so fun to stretch ourselves and get outside that old comfort zone, don’t you think?

Have a great day everyone and thanks for visiting today!

  1. Rita, I am interested in taking on line photography classes also. I may even invest in the camera you posted if I had enough confidence in learning out to operate it. We have a nice trip planned this fall and I really didn’t want to use my cell phone camera. Thanks for posting. Your posts are a joy to look at and print, especially the VT.

    1. Kathy, the online class that I am taking is at: http://www.iphotographycourse.com/ I got it as a Groupon deal, so so you might want to check into something like that. It is a great class going over all the basics. It tests you out at the end of every chapt. It even has homework assignments that you can send in and they will critique it. I have not done the homework assignments, but it has been a great refresher course for me and I picked lots of new tips and ideas. My camera is pretty user friendly, but I have been using a Nikon camera for many years, so I already knew all of the basics about it. There is a smaller Nikon camera that I looked at, but I cannot remember what the model number is. You might want to look into that one also. You can always put the camera on the automatic setting while you are learning how to use all of the other settings! Good luck!
