Sewing Skirts-Girls Sleepover

Last week I had three of my granddaughters for a sleepover!

One of them had been asking me when I was going to teach her how to sew, so I decided that I had better get on the ball  and get it done before school starts again.

We had a sewing… fingernail painting…lots of eating… tea party… fashion show… and dancing party!

To start of the evening we had dinner first, then we went right to work making these skirts:

I measured each of them and cut all of the fabric, then the girls started sewing, we folded the hem fabric in half and pressed it, then each of them sewed the hem onto the body of the skirt with the serger.   Next they serged along the top fabric of the skirt for the waistband.  We then pinned the back seam and they serged the back seam.  Each of them took their turn sewing with a little bit of help from grandma.  The girls went and played for a bit while I sewed the waistband for each of the skirts.  After trying on the skirts they picked out the flower that they wanted on the shirt and of course they all wanted to be the same! :)  While grandma was appliqueing the flowers to the shirts they practiced their fashion show walk and decided that they needed to do a dance along with the fashion show for grandpa!

After the fashion show it was time for jammies…

a tea party with shaved ice… and what kind of grandma would I be if we did not have some sort of  beauty salon experience!

They all stayed up watching movies until they were exhausted, but were up again early in the morning before I got home from exercising!  Wow, I wish I had just a little bit of their energy!

We had pink pancakes for breakfast, but we had to cook grandpa’s before making the rest of the pancakes pink, because he told them that pink was not cool!

So that was our fun sleepover with the girls!

But now I have been told that I need to do a sleepover for all the boys!  Oh Boy!

If you have a little girl and want to do a fun sewing project with her, this one is a great beginning project.  To make these skirts I cut a piece of 45″ wide fabric the length that I wanted the skirt to be less 2.5 inches, so the main body of the skirt was about 16 inches by the width of the fabric.  Cut off the selvages.

Cut the hem fabric 5 inches by the width of the fabric and fold in half (wrong sides together) and press.

Stitch the folded hem to the bottom of the skirt fabric.

Serge or zig zag the top of the skirt fabric.

Fold right sides together, matching the hem seam and stitch the back seam.

Fold the top of the skirt down 1.5 inches for the waistband and press.

Sew close to the serged edge, around the top of the skirt, to make a casing for the elastic, leaving an opening to insert the elastic.

Insert elastic and stitch the opening closed and you are done!

The girls loved that they were able to sew and I loved that they are learning how to sew and developing a love for an art was kind of lost, but is now coming back!

Do you have someone that would love to learn a new skill? Why not try your hand at teaching someone something new, it is very rewarding to see them light up when they see what they have accomplished!

Happy Monday Everyone!  Love Ya!
