I saw an apron at a little boutique a while back and I decided that I wanted try to make one. The idea is a very simple one, and when it came to making it, it was very simple to make! I love it when that happens!
To make this you will need an old pair of Levis, and two contrasting fabrics.
1. Cut the back side of your Levis with the pockets. I cut at the side seams and then cut it straight across just below the pockets. I cut mine 13 inches long, but you may want to adjust that length according to the pockets and your height. I also cut the waistband off with 2 1/4 inch tabs on each side. I top stitched down the sides to hold those cut off seams down. (I left the seam allowance on the inside, so that is what I stitched down)
2. Cut your top ruffle fabric to be 8 inches by the width of the fabric (WOF) Fold in half, wrong sides together and run a gathering stitch 1/4 inch from the edge. Gather the ruffle to fit and sew to the bottom of the apron, cut edges together.
3. Cut your bottom ruffle to be 12 inches by WOF. Fold in half to be 6 inches wide. Run a gathering stitch 1/4 inch from the edge. Gather and sew on top of the smaller ruffle. Press both ruffles down and top stitch along the bottom of the Levi edge.
4. Cut two strips of fabric that are double the width of your waistband plus 1/2 inch x WOF. My ties were 3 1/2 inches by WOF. (my waistband is 1 1/2 inches; times that by two and add 1/2 inch = 3 1/2 inches) Sew right sides together and stitch along the long edges, you can sew straight across the bottom, or you can sew a diagonal line to make the ends go to a point. Clip corners and turn right side out. Press. Sew to the waistband tabs and top stitch the seam.
Wrap the ties from the back through the belt loops and tie a bow in the front! So easy! These would make fun gifts for showers, birthdays, friends, thank you etc.
You could put some fun kitchen utensils in the pockets or tuck a recipe or two in there. I am sure you can think of lots of other fun goodies that you could add to these pockets! It is so fun that the back of the Levis…now become the front!
(Just a note…I used a pair of my son’s Levis so that they would be a little bit bigger and wrap around the sides a little bit. I don’t know if you really need to do that because the side seam could just be at your side!)
So now you need to go find an old pair of pants, some bright, fun fabric and try your hand at making your own “Flirty Levi Apron.” This is a super simple project that is perfect for a beginner, because it is all straight sewing and straight seams!
Happy Friday Everyone! Thanks for visiting!
I love this! Can’t wait to try it.
Thanks, Rita!
This looks like a great summer project for my granddaughter!!
