I had a really fun sleepover/baking class for my granddaughters the other day. They loved it and it turned out to be a really fun time for everyone!I gave them the “sugar and spice” aprons and they loved them! It was a little surprise that they did not know about. We decided that we should be the “sugar and spice club!” We started out by making butter cream frosting for the cupcakes. I had made the cupcakes earlier and they were in the freezer, so they would be easy to frost. Each of them helped measure and add ingredients to the frosting. They then learned how to fill a pastry bag and they each got to try their hand at frosting cupcakes! It was really fun and one of the girls kept saying “this is so fun…I have never done this before!”I had all kinds of sprinkles and candies for them to decorate with and they all went to town with the decorating!
We then made the sugar cookie dough, because it needed to refrigerate. The girls were all loving the smell of the vanilla and the almond extract! But then, who does not love that smell? :) I then taught them that a good baker always cleans up their mess! So they did the dishes all together and were laughing the whole time. Now why didn’t my kids laugh the whole time when they were doing the dishes, when they were younger??? We then made a big bowl of popcorn and went in and watched a movie.
The next morning after breakfast, we rolled out the cookie dough and they picked which shape they wanted to make. They thought that it was great that they each got their own ball of dough to work with. They made stars, hearts, flowers, dinosaurs, snowflakes and spelled out names with the letter cookie cutter! We had quite the assortment! We baked the cookies and while they were cooling off, the girls went and got dressed and the oldest granddaughter did all of their hair for them. We then proceeded to make the cream cheese frosting for the cookies. I went through two pounds of butter and two packages of cream cheese these last two days, but boy, was everything delicious! We made 3 more colors of frosting and used the leftover pink frosting from the night before. Again, they got to use the piping bag to put the frosting on the cookies and then use any of the sprinkles that they wanted! They were very creative and were laughing the whole time, so it was a great baking lesson! After we were all done…they did the dishes and cleaned up the kitchen again! They were all talking about the when the next time was to do another baking lesson. They all went home with a box of cookies and a plate of cupcakes to share with their family. We went to McDonald’s for lunch and to play for awhile and then I took them home. It was a very fun time for them and for grandma! I think we may have started a new tradition!
Do you have a fun activity that you do with your kids or grandkids? I would love to hear about it.
