We did a little “Stay-cation” with my daughter and her two children last weekend! The kids had a great time and it was a fun little getaway. We went to “This Is the Place” Park. It is located right across the street from the Hogle Zoo. If any of you are in Utah and want a fun little “pioneer experience”… This is the place! (get it!)
This is the monument that has been erected to mark “this is the place” that the pioneers settled into the Salt Lake Valley. The original monument that the pioneers made was much smaller and simpler than this one and you can see that monument also.
This is the welcoming wagon! I loved all the flowers in this wagon, they are just stunning!
As you walk around this little community, there are all kinds of houses, shops, hospitals, businesses and a church. There are different activities or tours at each location. One of the first homes that we went into had this cute little pioneer family in it. They told us of their pioneer life and taught us how to milk a cow. There were 10 children in this family and they all lived in a one room cabin! My we are all spoiled now days aren’t we?
This little shop was selling fresh, hot, homemade donuts! They cooked them as you waited and they were delicious! We had to stop here and remind the kids that Brigham Young is their 5th great grandpa! We all kept saying that grandpa sure did make good donuts! :)
There were pony rides…
(I don’t know if this one really liked the pony ride or not. She kept holding her breath, because she did not like the smell!)
And train rides…we ended up taking several train rides.
I think this was my grandson’s most favorite thing. The conductors told stories and jokes and all the kids loved them!
We rode the train out to the Native American village and they helped the kids make an arrowhead necklace.
They performed a song for us along with their drums, it was great!
We then hopped back on the train and went down to see Grandpa Brigham’s house. This was a big home and they held all kinds of activities and dances there. It was built in 1863 and relocated here in 1976.
Then to cool off a bit the kids had a great time at the splash pad or the “irrigation station!” It was a very hot day, so this was a welcome relief to them! They had a great time! We dried off and went to the ZCMI store to do a couple more crafts and then to the old fashioned candy store! It was a fun day and the kids loved playing and learning and acting like pioneers! There were many more activities like panning for gold, a small train ride, the blacksmith shop, the bakery, a quilt display and much more! So there is a lot to enjoy at this park!
We then headed up to our cabin to spend the night. There were 4-wheeler rides with grandpa…
and all kinds of wildlife to enjoy!
It was a great little “Stay-cation!”
What kinds of fun things do you have to do right around your own backyard? Sometimes it is just fun to discover what we have right around us!
Maybe you could take a little “stay-cation” and figure some fun things to do in your area!
Have a great day everyone! Love Ya!
