Sept. 2012 Visiting Teaching Handout

This month’s lesson is titled “Special Needs and Service Rendered”  I love the message to all of us about how we need to serve others!  President Monson is such a great example of this and we probably could all do a little better in this area…I know that at least I could do better!  For this month’s handout I decided to use a fall theme with owls.  I bought these owls at the Wood Connection and painted and decorated them, and they were my inspiration for this handout.

Here are the handouts.  I did the message on one card with a second card that has a yummy fall recipe on it!  To print, right click on the image and go to copy.  Open your favorite program like presentations or word and right click again and go to paste. You can then just print it.  If you want to print it as a photo, right click and go to “save image as” and save in one of your photo files.  Both of these are formatted in 4″ X 6″.I absolutely love President Monson’s quote:  “Unless we lose ourselves in service to others, there is little purpose to our own lives.”  How true this is!

This recipe is one of my favorite fall recipes!  I love this moist cake filled full of freshly grated apples and spices and topped with this delicious caramel sauce! **  YUM!  It might be fun to make the caramel sauce and put in a small bottle to give to your sisters!  It is great for the cake, but oh so good drizzled over sliced apples, ice cream, or just straight from the spoon!:)

Happy Visiting!

** I have had several comments and emails asking how much a square of butter is.  It is a cube of butter which is 1/2 cup.

      1. I understand:) I live in Alabama so I don’t have access to the wood connection here and I can’t find the owls on the wood connection web-site. They are still cute as can be and thanks again for the adorable idea.

  9. Thanks so much for the idea and recipe! We made the caramel sauce to take to our VT ladies. Is it supposed to be BROWN sugar? We used white and it never turned brown…Still good, though!

    1. You use white sugar, but when you let it boil slowly for 10 minutes it turns a lovely caramel color! Glad that it still had a good flavor.

    1. You are so welcome! I am glad that you can use one of my ideas, it makes me very happy! Thank you for taking the time to comment, I really love to hear from my readers.

  10. I may be at the end of the month for an “official” visit this time…but just found your creative and cute handout and am going to whip up some Apple Cake with Caramel Sauce for my sweet sisters. Thanks for sharing!! May I sit on your shoulder and watch how you create sometime? Delightfully, a fan from the beautiful Deseret Ranch in Florida.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind comment. I always love to hear when my readers can use one of my ideas. I am just a little bit jealous of the beautiful Deseret Ranch in Florida however! Especially since we will soon be in the cold winter here in Utah. :)

  11. Adorable! Is there anyway to get a blank one to add your own words? I already made some yummy applesauce chocolate chip cookies and would love to be able to put that recipe on a matching owl card to go along with the message.

    1. Jennifer, I sent the blank copy to your email. FYI I will be including a blank card every month so that anyone can write whatever they would like. I have had several requests for this for those who want to translate to another language. Thanks so much for your input, I appreciate it!

  12. Thank you so much – I love owls! How did you know? :) Super cute design – thanks again for sharing your talents and encouraging others to do their visiting teaching!

  13. Love the card and recipe. I made the sauce to give and it didn’t turn brown for the longest. But I took it off when light brn and then it hardened when I put in the jars. I guess there is a trick as to when it is done. Hope it will microwave back into sauce. :)

    1. You may have cooked it a little bit too long, but you can definitely soften it by adding a little more cream to it and bringing to a boil. Good luck!
