Yesterday we had our 2nd sewing lesson with my granddaughter. She was excited to sew and immediately went to the sewing machine and started sewing her straight lines on the striped material. She is always so proud to show me what she has done after each line that she sews! She is doing really well, especially for a 6 year old!
This project took a little bit more of Grandma’s help, but as far as all the seams, my granddaughter sewed all of them!We simply bought this pre-shirred piece of fabric at Wally World, sewed the back seam together after matching all the lines up, added the white ruffle on the bottom and the straps that tie to the shoulders! How simple. I did all the pinning and sewed the ruffle, but my granddaughter did all the seams on the dress and the straps. She was very excited to see how to sew the ruffle and she kept saying: “Grandma, you are right, if you can sew a straight seam…you can sew anything!”
She says that she is now ready for the 4th of July, and I think that she looks pretty patriotic!
Not to be left out, we had to snap a few shots of her brother! Don’t you love that he is wearing her pink flip flops! (He has no problem with his manhood!)Do any of you have any simple sewing ideas that we can use. We are going to make a couple of pillows for my hammock, and a skirt for her, but I would love to hear about any of your fun sewing projects that are on the beginner level!
Rita–what cute grandchildren. Love the cute dress, what a fun project. My daughter and her family are here from Chicago. My 6 and 8 year old grandchildren have been having a great time in my craft room–no rules, just fun and plenty of glitter!
That dress turned out really cute! I love how you are sharing it with your granddaughter, too. My grandma taught me to cross stitch years ago. Man I miss her.
What a sweet comment! You just made me miss my grandma too! She was the greatest!
Your grandchildren are beautiful! And she should be so proud to have sewn so much of it herself. And I love that she’s learning this with you. How special!
Thank you so much for that kind comment. She is quite proud and it is fun to be able to share time together learning something new! I am just glad that she wants to learn:) Makes a grandma proud!
It turned out so cute! Looks like Grandma is a great teacher!
Thank you so much for your comment and the compliment. I love hearing from my readers and I appreciate your taking the time to write!
I love the dress!
Oh this posts brings back so many memories. I learned a lot of sewing tips from my grandma too. Your granddaughter made such a nice dress!
Here’re some tutorials that she may find easy to do:

Love it! I am learning how to sew (again, my grandma taught me when I was young too!) So this will be a great idea to modify for my ten month old daughter :)
Oooh, that sounds darling for a little one! Everything is always cuter on a baby girl! :)
