Make-up Bag and Brush Holder

One of the stops that we made on our recent trip was at the Mac Cosmetic Store in Las Vegas!  I love going to this store because we only have Mac Counters in Utah, so when I get close to a store I try to make a visit!  :)

I love their products and the quality, but they are a little pricey so I feel like I have to be careful when using them and take good care of my products.  So when I got home I decided that a new make-up bag and brush holder were in order!

I am really quite tickled with how they turned out and I love the bright new colors!

Both of these are really simple to sew.

They are both a beginning project for anyone who sews!  There are a lot of pictures here in this post, because I took a picture of every step, but they are simple, easy steps!

To make the make-up brush holder you will need a wash cloth and 28 inches of ribbon. (I used grosgrain ribbon because it seems to hold up better when you want to wash it.)

Fold the wash cloth up 4 inches on one of the hemmed sides.

Pin in place and sew the two side seams

Next, you will want to mark the center with a pin and sew a seam down the center.

Mark 1 1/2 inches on each side of the center and sew.

Then mark 1 inch on each side going out and sew.

Sew 3/4 inch seams repeating all the way to the edges.

Turn over and sew a 28 inch piece of ribbon to the back on one of the seams.  Fold the ribbon in half and mark with a pin, then sew about 4 inches from the right,  Place it on the closest seam.  You will want the ribbon to be placed to the right so that when you roll up your brushes it will tie in the middle!

Then simply insert your make-up brushes with the bigger ones in the middle and the smaller ones on the sides.

Roll up…

And tie into a cute bow!

I love these brush holders because you can wipe your brushes right on the cloth to clean them and then when they get really dirty like this old one you just throw it in the washing machine!

I paired this up with a new make-up bag and I now I am one happy camper!  I love the colors and it makes me happy to get ready in the morning!  I made this bag a little bit deeper than my pouches and when I travel the brush holder will fit inside the bag! :)

Here is my make-up tip for the day:

Brush your lashes with powder before applying mascara.  It helps to keep your lashes separate and beautiful!  I just use my eyeshadow base color because it is powder!

The make up bag is one of my “Easy to Sew Zippered Pouches” shown here.

They are also a very simple project and you can use two matching fabrics to match your brush holder!  SEW fun!

Just a side note*  This weekend is General Conference Weekend for my church .  If you are interested in listening you can find it here.

I am one that loves to take notes and doodle while I am listening to conference so I love to print off packets to help me take notes and help me listen just a little bit closer!  I made some for the kids too!  You can find these great packets at Sugardoodle and they are free!  They have made several notebooks for different age group and they are wonderful!  They have also translated them into different languages!  I appreciate all the work and time that goes into making these fun, informative packets!  Thanks Melanie!

  1. Oh Rita, What is it like to have so many wonderful ideas roaming around inside that beautiful head of yours? You never cease to amaze me! I have always wanted to learn to sew -I think I’m going to have to try this one. Maybe even I can do it since it is just straight lines. Thanks for sharing so many fun things to try.

  2. Teri, How fun to hear from you! I hope that all is going well with you and your family! You could totally do this project, it is a simple, fun project to work on! Thanks for your comment, have a great day!

    1. I know, what do we need to do to get a store back here! Thanks for stopping by, I appreciate your comment and your support.

  3. Great idea! Do you ever have trouble with the machine tangling the thread while sewing through the terry cloth? I’m thinking of using this for teaching a basic sewing class, and want to avoid any possible setbacks as students get terribly discouraged when their machines do things they don’t expect. :)

    1. Mikel, I have not had any problems with the machine getting caught on the terry cloth. I think that this would be a great project for a beginning sewing class, because it is just straight lines!
