Recycled Sweater Scarf

A couple of weeks ago, I visited a good friend of mine who had a boutique booth at “This is the Place” in Salt Lake City.  She had so many cute things and it was fun to go to this boutique.  It was outside in the winter time!  They had fires going in the evenings and carolers and it was an old fashioned Christmas setting!  So fun!

While at this boutique, one of my purchases was a fun sweater scarf.

I loved it and knew right away that I wanted to duplicate it and make some for Christmas gifts!

Aren’t these sisters the cutest!

They are my friend’s daughters and I asked them to be my models and they were so gracious to consent.  I love how they all have their own very distinct personalities!  They are such sweet girls.

This is the scarf that I bought at the boutique:

I love all the details!  The pocket, the button placket, lace, flowers, ruffles, buttons and all the different textures in the sweaters!

I got 3 different sweaters and my daughter and I were able to make 4 scarves out of 3 sweaters!

To make a scarf, just simply cut squares or rectangles out of old sweaters.  Zigzag around any unfinished edges to prevent the sweater from unraveling.  Use the sleeves, the bottom band, the buttons, the plackets,or any fun part of the sweater.  Use different textures and designs.  I love the cable knit pieces!  We cut the pieces about 6″ wide and the lengths varied from 12″-17″ long.   The total length of  our scarves were about 75″ long.  Embellish any way that you would like, but get creative with the details in the sweaters and use the extra “fabric” to make flowers, ruffles, pockets etc.

These are the scarves that I made:

This one has a sweater flower, a fun ruffle with fringe and a button, and several different patterns and textures of sweater pieces.  We decided to just decorate the two ends, because the one I bought is a little bit tricky to tie with all the embellishments all the way around the scarf.DSC_0510

I love the button placket on this scarf  along with the ruffle, fringe and lace flower.  I also love the striped end pieces.  They were the sleeves!

So what do you think?

Do you want to make a sweater scarf?  They really are an easy, cute, fun way to recycle some of those old sweaters that you have hanging in your closet!

Now I can check one more thing off my “to do” list!

How are you coming on all your Christmas shopping, crafting, baking, and party making?

I am starting to panic a bit now, because time is getting short and I have a few more things to do, so I guess I’d better get going!

Have a great day today doing whatever you have to do!  Love Ya!
