Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag

A few days ago I had all the grand kids over for another little water party with the blow up slide.  They love the slide and we had a great time.  For a little treat we made homemade ice cream in a baggie!  They thought that it was kind of fun to each be able to make their own little bag of ice cream.  It is really easy to do…all you need is your favorite ice cream mix, zip lock baggies, ice and salt.  Then you have to shake, shake, shake it, like this:After about 15 minutes or so, it is ice cream!  Add in some of your favorite toppings…(don’t you love coffee filters, they make the best little bowls!)And eat your ice cream right out of the bag! And if you do it outside, you can just hose down the whole patio when you are done!:)What fun!
I just used a store-bought ice cream mix that you buy in the gallon milk bottle, but you can use your own ice cream recipe, or here is one for you that I found on familyfun.com

Ice Cream in a Bag

2 tablespoons sugar

1 cup half and half

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup salt (The bigger the granules, the better, Kosher or rock salt works best, but you can use table salt)

Ice cubes (enough to fill each gallon-size bag about half full)

1 pint size ziplock bag

1 gallon size bag

Instructions:

Combine the sugar, half and half and vanilla in the pint-size bag and seal it tightly.  Place the salt and ice in the gallon-size bag, then place the sealed smaller bag inside as well.  Seal the larger bag.  Now shake the bags until the mixture hardens (about 10-15 minutes).  Feel the small bag to determine when it’s done.  Take the smaller bag out of the larger one, add mix-ins and eat the ice cream right out of the bag.  Easy cleanup too!  Serves 1.

What a fun thing to do on a hot summer afternoon!  The kids had a fun time and  were able to cool off a bit!  Look at some of these happy faces:

I wanted to just jump right in with them, but instead, I just sat in the shade and took pictures!I think that these are the best looking grand kids out there, but I may be just a bit prejudiced! The older boy cousins had a great time comparing Pokeman cards and they had quite the collections between all of them! All in all it was a fun get together and they loved learning how to make their own ice cream.  I love that we all live close enough together that we can have parties like this and that the cousins can be such great friends!

What is your favorite summer party?

  1. My family does this as too. We use a large coffee can so instead of shaking, the kids roll the can back & forth. Lots of fun! Visiting from Sundae Scoop linkup :)
