1st Sewing Lesson

I saw an ad in a local paper for sewing lessons for children and when I checked into it I found out that it was already full, but it got me thinking that it might be a fun grandma camp to do this summer with my oldest granddaughter!  Since I already have her here at my house twice a week it would work out perfect.

I first started her sewing on my little old portable Singer sewing machine.  It goes quite slow and so it is perfect for a beginner!  I had some striped fabric and she just practiced sewing some straight lines.  I think that she did pretty good for the first time!  What do you think?   I kept telling her that if  you can sew a straight line, you can sew anything! Then we went over to my serger to sew a pillowcase.  She actually handled the serger really well and even though I was right beside her, she did the sewing! To make a simple pillowcase you will need 3/4 yard of fabric for the body and 1/4 yard for the cuff.  Fold the cuff over in half so that it is 4 1/2 ” wide  and press.  Sew the doubled cuff to the body right sides together.  Then fold the pillowcase in half  right sides together with the cuff at the top and sew down the side seam and then across the bottom.  Turn right side out and pull the corners out with a pin.  Easy peasy! She made hers and then she wanted to make another one for her little brother! I think that I might  have a little sewing girl on my hands!  (A sewing grandma’s dream!)For the next lesson, we bought a little piece of elastic smocked fabric to make a very simple jumper for the 4th of July.  So stay tuned…

Do you have a little sewing buddy that you can teach how to sew?  It really is quite a fun project for both of you and since sewing is becoming a lost art you can do your part to make sure that the future generations learn this trade.

  1. You are such a good grandma! :D And what a cute little seamstress :D How old is she and is she extra responsible? My oldest granddaughter is 6 and I’m not sure if I could handle a needle through her finger if things went awry :(

    1. My granddaughter is only 6, but she is a very tall six year old and can reach the pedal on the sewing machine! She is also a very responsible child. I worry about the needle thing too, but so far so good.

  2. Do you have a tutorial on a pillow case dress? My MIL had a super cute tan with palm trees printed case and i want to make it into a dress for my baby! :) thanks!

    1. That is something that I have not done a tutorial for yet. But it is a great idea for the future! Keep tuned in and I will try to work that into the sewing lesson schedule! Thanks for the idea!
